A Confession

*this will sound like rambling because I am. Just woke up and am still lying down in bed, I just felt like blogging.

Quote for the day:

“Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.”

For the longest time I’ve proclaimed my dislike for Valentine’s Day, and I know I haven’t been alone in this. You’ve probably all heard these sentiments repeated over and over again from all sorts of people, single or otherwise, and that’s because they’re true: Valentine’s Day is overrated, unnecessary, hackneyed, blah blah etc. Also, my favorite: if you really love each other you shouldn’t need a day dedicated to showing it.

But see, yeah, we don’t need Valentine’s Day, but it’s there! It’s a thing! Capitalists invented it so we can throw money away on flowers and teddy bears and chocolate, and at the end of the day, that’s totally okay. I mean, what’s wrong with making just a tiny bit of effort to make one day a tiny bit more special for your loved ones, eh?

So here’s my confession: I actually love Valentine’s. Heart-shaped stuff!! Giant teddy bears!!! Seeing guys awkwardly clutching bouquets everywhere!!! Why would anyone honestly HATE that?

Sure, the traffic is terrible and it gets crowded everywhere, but that’s what reservations are for. Or, you know, stay in and cook up something nice! And if you can’t get a cab to take you home, do what I did last night and take the bus! They’re not that bad! And if you don’t have money, make something yourself!! That would actually be 100% sweeter than getting something from the store!! MAKE AN EFFORT!!! IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO TAKE THE ONE YOU LOVE FOR GRANTED!!!!!!! YOU KNOW THIS!!!!

It would have been easy for me to be sad and bitter yesterday, and I confess that I felt those emotions, too, but after scrolling down my Instagram and Facebook feeds and seeing friends-who-I-love (and even acquaintances-who-I-feel-almost-nothing-for) happy because of how loved they felt, it was impossible to stay a Scrooge. So there.

It would be nice to be part of that world one day. The last time I got anything from a romantic interest on VDay was back in 2006, and that fact alone makes me pretty sad actually…………. ANYWAY! Maybe one day I’ll have what my friends have, but for now I’m making myself content with cherishing all the platonic loves I have now. Because I have no choice. Lols. Kidding. Half-kidding.

I hope you all had a happy Valentine’s Day. Especially all you single folk out there. May we all feel loved anyway!!!

  2. Well, better to not celebrate than to get harrassed and bled dry financially. Yeah, still feeling the sting.

@ade I’m sure there are ways to celebrate VDay without getting harassed and/or suddenly poor… just as long as expectations are clear. some people (i.e. me) would be happy with just a handmade card or an origami heart or something haha. (i’m reaaaaally easily pleased. it’s a blessing and a curse :| )
