Quote for the day:
“We all need somebody to lean on.”
- Bill Withers
To the good people of the world:
I wish I could give you all of your needs – rubber boots for wet soles, a wide-brimmed hat for every sunburned nose, for every scrape – a band-aid, for every heartbreak – a new and bigger love.
But being just an ordinary person with ordinary powers and ordinary weaknesses, I have to settle with what I can readily give, which is, if you wish, my friendship.
I am not an open-book sort of person – anyone who knows me can attest to that – and I don’t think that will change in the near future. I’m not the first person you’d turn to for the latest gossip, or the person you’d want to dance with at a club, or the person you could count on to make you happy all the time (because note: there is no such person).
But should you want a listening ear, a vacant shoulder, a back-scratch, a hug – I am here. If you need someone to hold your hair back when you’ve had too much to drink and are spewing on the sidewalk, I’m your girl. If you are badly in need of a companion to escape to the great outdoors with, I shall drop everything to join you on your adventure (providing that I have the money ). If you feel like no-one in the world can understand what you are going through, try me; I won’t judge, I won’t say anything unless I know you want me to.
I will be the girl who can sit comfortably in your silence, the girl who will help you clean up after hosting a party, the girl who will tie herself up in knots over the quest for your perfect birthday present. I will like all your facebook and instagram posts and, should we be separated geographically, will continue to check up on how you are doing by stalking your profile. I will probably distrust most of your significant others (because who could be worthy of someone as wonderful like you?), but I will get over my initial misgivings and let them grow on me once I see how happy you are with them. I will be there for as long as you still need me as your witness, rejoicing with you over your victories (both big and small) and feeling outrage when the world causes you pain.
I know it’s not a lot. It’s not much because I’m not much, and I have to confess that I may sometimes need you more than you need me, but I am all I have to offer. I hope you will consider me for this position.
I eagerly await your decision. Until then, I leave you with this song (also my philosophy when choosing friends).
